On the 2nd October, at the opening of the Expo 2023 Doha, Massimo Lucchini, the CEO of Idromeccanica Lucchini, presented the Italian pavilion built in collaboration with ITA. The structure is a concentrate of beauty, technology, innovation and 100% Italian expertise. The 600 sqm pavilion, which was built under extreme climatic conditions highlights the cutting-edge technological achievements in the field of vertical farming and hydroponics and welcomes guests and visitors in an air-conditioned environment, showing the elegance of the Italian style. Here, beauty and technology go hand in hand thanks to the mushroom-shaped shade structures furnished with custom-made tanks connected by a closed-circuit fertigation and recycling system.
The project stands out not only for its beauty but above all for its technology as it allows cultivation in extreme climatic conditions. In this way it is possible to spread vegetation in the desert obtaining healthy and fresh food everywhere. Idromeccanica Lucchini has created micro propagation, hydroponics, ebb and flow and other cutting-edge technologies to grow healthy and genetically perfect food in vertical cultivation. Genetics is in fact the other frontier of innovation. In addition to soilless cultivation techniques, the great challenges of the future will be focused on the genetic aspect.
If soilless techniques allow significant energy and, above all, water (up to 95% less) savings, genetics maximizes quality and food safety. Cells of a perfectly healthy and qualitatively optimal plant are reproduced on gelatin and nourished with specific natural elements. The cells propagate in a sterile laboratory, take root and result in genetically perfect plants, reproductions of the healthy mother plant. In this way, disease-resistant seedlings can be obtained with excellent yields in both quantity and quality. Once grown, the plants are then grown on a peat-based substrate and fertigated there until they are ready for final cultivation in the open field.
